November 2009

Welcome to November!

We are quickly approaching the end of term 1 and are wrapping up many units and projects while slowly starting others.  October was quite a change from September in that it was jam packed with activity and, unfortunately, illness.  Many of our students and their families have been struck down and out with some terrible sickness. For those of you who have fallen victim please know that your health comes first.

If your children have been ill, please don't rush them back to the classroom out of fear of having them fall behind.  They need rest to recover and they will need their energy to concentrate.  It is happening all over the place, so don't feel you are being over cautious. As we are constantly being told 'it is a different flu season' and we are needing to take care and not feel bad about that.  Our office is advising us to let parents know the following:

Parents in the school have reported confirmed cases of H1N1.   This is for information only.   Please keep in mind that confirmation of H1N1 is unusual and difficult, because most medical professionals are not devoting their time to confirming a diagnosis.  The Health Unit is not recommending or advising any additional actions, other than the measures already recommended in their guidelines, which are posted on our board's web-site.
Guidelines for Elementary_Secondary Schools_English_Final_A.pdf

If the absence has become longer than expected, I can always send work home for the students to complete if they are able.

I too am recovering from being sick and if you had been checking the web site last week, you would have noticed that I fell very behind in updating things.  Marking, assignments, and the regular classroom activities are all going to hopefully be caught up on soon ;).

Important Dates:
Please note that for the 5e année site we have a web calendar that is frequently being updated (See side bar menu) as well as the school's calendar that you can verify. I have attached the Jeanne Sauvé Newsletter and Calendar here.

HOMEWORK
French Reading log:
All the student are to have signed out  books from our school library.  Students should begin to take their French selections home to read 20 minutes every night, Monday-Thursday

*Log sheets to record the reading of French books began Thursday the 24th of September.*
I ask that students record the page #s they read on a tracking sheet that I have provided in their Lecture française duotang. We will also begin vocabulary look-up sheets. These are going home for students to track new vocab they encounter as they read beginning in October.

Logging and vocab work are included in the 20 minutes assigned nightly, and are not meant as an addition to the 20 minutes.

From time to time  students will have reading response sheets to do as well. Stay tuned for this!

To help the students stay organized we are working on a homework helper package to help them develop good habits and a sound work ethic.  Parents are encouraged to go over the skills being covered with their child and to support any tips provided that the each student is trying to adopt for themselves.

Schedules and Routines

Upon arriving in the morning, students should change their shoes at their locker and bring their snack, pencil case and all of their homework and books into the classroom.  Backpacks and lunch are to stay in their lockers.

Agendas and reading logs will be checked daily. Students will place these on their desk and open them to the appropriate date. Parents are invited to use the agenda to communicate with the teachers. I will do my best to reply beside the note in the agenda if necessary.  We will try this and see how it works.  A reminder that there are 3 instructors at a time for this grade so (Currently Mme Vallance for Music and Mme Goodyear for Math), if your note pertains to Music or Math, please be clear to indicate who you are writing to. Students are required to copy down all homework each day. This way they can put a check mark beside work that is complete to keep track.

A reminder that...

Our Phys Ed is on Tuesdays and Fridays – students are expected to have gym clothes (e.g.: Jeanne Sauvé T-shirt and a pair of shorts/exercise pants) and deodorant stick (as needed) at school to wear for gym.

Our Library time is on Thursday afternoons.

Closing comments
A big thank you to the parent and guardian volunteers that came to City Hall for Local Government Week on October 23rd.  We really appreciate that you were there and the students enjoyed the trip.

Also, a another big thank you to all who helped and or attended our Gr 4/5 and 5 Religion 'Rock' celebration.  The students worked very hard and were really proud and happy to have such great attendance at the event.  The treats were delicious and we are so thankful for everyones efforts and support in celebrations such as these.  Merci!!
