Welcome to my Credit Cards

Welcome

My name is Carine Morrow, and I have been an Educational Assistant at Holy Name of Mary School, St. Marys, since January, 1990.  Over the years, I have been assigned to many students with many different needs.

Some years ago, Pam Robson, who was the Resource teacher at Holy Name of Mary School at the time, introduced me to a journal article by Alan Edmunds about Cognitive Credit Cards.  I was intrigued by the concept and decided to try these with the students that I was working with in the area of math.   The students were thrilled with them, especially when they were doing their homework.  Over the years, I have created many Cognitive Credit Cards (CCC), based on Edmunds' concept, with many students.  Most of the cards that I have created are Math oriented using colour to help students navigate a math concept.   There are some Language and French CCC.

My experience with CCC has been over whemingly positive.  The students that I have introduced the cards to have had great success.  For many, the CCC represents a security blanket.  They know the card is there if they need it.  At first, they may rely on the card quite a bit, but over time they find that they don't have to refer to the card any longer.   The joy at knowing they can do their work independently is gratifying to both the student and myself.    I have seen students gain confidence in their math skills, as well, I have seen them re-teach themselves a concept that they may have forgotten.

I have organized the CCC under each of the five strands - numeration, data management, patterning, measurement and geometry.  You will notice that there are often two or three CCC based on the same concept.  Sometimes, this is because they have been created with different students, each wishing the card written a certain way or sometimes, the CCC will be either at a junior or intermediate level.

I am very happy to be able to share the CCC as a resource for teachers, students and parents alike.
